Each of these four categories of singers is defined below.
Professional singers earn the majority of their income through musical employment.
Semi-professional singers earn the majority of their income through a “day job” while earning a supplementary portion of their income through musical employment. Collegiate voice majors, i.e., aspiring professional singers-in-training are also placed in this category.
Emerging singers are preparing and aspiring towards a professional or semi-professional vocal career. Emerging singers are usually of high school age, however they may also be singers entering the music profession later in life.
Volunteer singers are talented singers that rarely, if ever, sing for pay, yet relish volunteering their time and talent for a number of important vocal performance needs and outlets, such as, as a soloist for a wedding or funeral, a singer in a church choir or community choir, a worship leader in a worship band, a role/actor/character in a community musical theatre production, or as a karaoke performer.
